Upgrade from Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 to Windows 10 entirely for free and using the official Microsoft web site.

Web site where you can upgrade to Windows 10:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows 7. If you’re still running Windows 7, you’re at risk of attacks and viruses since there are no longer any updates or patches. Windows 8 and 8.1 are both still supported; however, since the upgrade is free, you might as well get onto the latest and greatest version of Windows.

On the web site under the Create Windows 10 installation media, click on Download tool now. This will download an exe to your computer. Click on this file. When finished, open the download and accept the license terms
Choose: ‘Upgrade this PC now’ then click ‘Next’
Choose ‘Keep personal files and apps’
Once installed, open: Settings – Windows Update – Activation to activate your Windows 10 digital license…
OR enter your (genuine) Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key if you haven’t previously activated your old version of Windows

If you’d like to check your license has successfully been activated afterwards, open: Settings – Update & Security – Activation.

Note: a Windows 10 license is tied to your hardware. As such, if you need to format your computer for any reason Windows 10 will reactivate automatically.

As full disclosure, I work at Microsoft as a full-time employee.

  4. So, what if you didn’t buy windows 7, and it’s probably not up to date?

Edit: It works! I kept everything and still managed to free up space on my C drive as well. Very nice and thanks for the tip!

  5. ok kevin nice of you to showcase this free procedure of upgrading to win 10 but may i suggest for you to do it on a win 7 or win 8 machine and do it all the way so that any “noob” can follow your steps and see the entire procedure ? thanks again for the effort and heres a thumbs up

  6. I upgraded all my systems to windows 10 back when I was beta testing…I’ve never had remorse so bad. My old window’s 7 system is still running clean after 8 years…the two systems I left upgraded…well I’ve had to add 3 other malware/virus/firewall protections and still have had 3 major infections. I don’t do “shady” zones on the internet. I can’t imagine what a less informed user can be having. No thanks. Linux looking more and more like a functional option. 🙂

  18. Not true. It’s just a temp deal. To access the features you have to purchase the paid Version. I’ve tried this and wiped it back to Win 7. Please beware of this.

  19. OMG! Awesome thank you so much. I can’t believe I pulled that off. Truly a step by step tutorial. Blessings.

  20. $10 million question: Why does Microsoft sell a version for $139 when they also offer this method for free (and keep it a pretty good secret)?? I mean, it seems like the only advantages of the paid CD version are that it installs more quickly and that it can be used on multiple computers.

  21. Still works in 2021 thanks! They probably want people to upgrade to prevent a world-wide botnet thing from happening.

  22. Mine said this tool can’t update your pc the language or edition of the version of windows currently installed on your pc isn’t supported by this tool
